Agriculture Affects Our Daily Lives

Sometimes we take for granted the role that agriculture plays in our daily lives. From the food we eat, getting dressed, the cleaning supplies we use, fueling up and the books we read. Almost everything in our lives can be traced back to agriculture.

Let’s take a closer look at the 5 F’s of Agriculture:

Food: Most, if not all, of our food products can be traced back to the farm. Some of it can be eaten raw such as tomatoes and apples, and some need to be processed before we can consume it like wheat being turned into bread. Farms are also a place where we raise animals, and this is where we get our meat and eggs from.

Farm: This is the place where the actual production of food and fiber is done. They grow the plants and raise the animals here to create the products that we consume. Through an understanding in ecosystems, water, soil, weather, chemistry and plant & animal biology, they provide us with the things we need to survive.

Forestry: As we know, paper comes from trees. In order to get paper, we must begin by cultivating trees. Forests are grown to do just this. They provide us with things such as doors, desks and of course the paper we write on.

Flowers: Nurseries grow flowers for mostly for aesthetic and beauty reasons. Either for you to plant in your garden or give as gifts to those you love.

Fabric: The two most important natural fibers that are produced on the farm are wool and cotton. This is where we get thread and yarn which is then turned into the things we wear. These include our socks, shirts, leggings, and it even produces our blankets, curtains and carpets.

Now that you have a better understanding of where your day to day products come from, its time to stop taking farmers for granted. Support your local farmer just as they support you!

Come join us this Sunday at the Port Moody Market, POP kids will be learning how most of the items they use lead back to farms. This will help them understand the importance of agriculture in our daily lives.

Also, next Sunday on January 19, 2020, we will be making tote bags out of old t-shirts. So, if you have any old t-shirts you would like to donate to the POP Club kids, please drop them off to the POP Club booth this Sunday! It’s much appreciated!

Hope to see you there!

If you haven’t yet registered for the program this season, make sure you visit the POP tent to get started!
